Building on Google Cloud from Pakistan: regions, data residency, pricing and partners

There is no Google Cloud region inside Pakistan — and for most workloads that matters less than people assume. The nearest regions sit in Doha, Dammam, Mumbai and Delhi, latency from Karachi is workable for business applications, and the questions that actually decide a project are residency rules, billing and who you build with. Here is what we tell clients.

The nearest regions, and latency

Google Cloud's locations page lists regions in Doha (me-central1), Dammam (me-central2), Mumbai (asia-south1) and Delhi (asia-south2) — all a short hop from Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. For web applications, APIs, data platforms and AI assistants, the round-trip from Pakistan to the Gulf or India regions is comfortably within what users notice as "instant". For latency-critical workloads, measure from your own network before deciding; for everything else, pick the region your regulator and your team prefer.

Data residency: what regulators actually ask

Pakistani regulators and public bodies rarely ask "which country is the data centre in" as a single question. They ask: who can access the data, under what law, with what audit trail, and can we get it back? Google Cloud answers these with customer-managed encryption keys, organisation policies that restrict resources to chosen regions, access transparency logs and documented contractual terms. For the most sensitive workloads — some government and financial data — fully on-premise deployment remains the answer, and we have delivered government AI that way. The National AI Policy 2025's emphasis on data security makes it sensible to write residency and access requirements into every tender; our procurement playbook covers the wording.

Vertex AI, Gemini and what's available where

Not every AI service is available in every region on day one. Vertex AI model availability, Vertex AI Search, Document AI processors and Gemini Enterprise connectors are rolled out region by region, so confirm availability for your chosen region at design time — or architect so that data stays in your region while model calls use a nearby one, where your policy allows. Our UN agency enterprise search and BigQuery data layer programmes were both designed around exactly this constraint.

Billing, currency and cost control

  • Currency: Google Cloud bills in USD for most Pakistani accounts; budget for exchange-rate movement and the banking steps for international card or invoice payments.
  • Pay-as-you-go: no upfront commitment; committed-use discounts once usage is predictable.
  • Cost control: budgets and alerts, per-project billing, and right-sizing reviews every quarter. AI usage is metered — put quotas on it.
  • Exports: PSEB-registered exporters serving foreign clients can route cloud costs through the client's project where the contract allows — simpler billing, cleaner ownership.

Working with a partner from Karachi

A partner's job is to make the first project succeed and the second one cheap: landing-zone setup with IAM, networking and logging done properly; a governed data layer; AI assistants grounded with permissions and citations; and a handover your team can run. 1 Sol builds on Google Cloud from NASTP and Malir Cantt in Karachi, is a delivery partner to Lanthos — a Google Cloud and Gemini implementation partner in the US — and our founder holds Google Cloud Gemini Enterprise certifications. Start with a scoping call; we will tell you if Azure or AWS is the better fit for your case.

FAQ

Is there a Google Cloud region in Pakistan?

No. The nearest Google Cloud regions are Doha (me-central1), Dammam (me-central2), Mumbai (asia-south1) and Delhi (asia-south2). Latency from Pakistan to these regions is fine for business applications and AI assistants.

Can we keep data in Pakistan and still use Google Cloud AI?

For many cases, a hybrid works: data stays on-premise or in a Pakistan-based environment while model calls go to a nearby region, where policy allows. For the most sensitive workloads, fully on-premise deployment is possible and 1 Sol has delivered it for government.

How does Google Cloud billing work from Pakistan?

Pay-as-you-go in USD, with budgets, alerts and committed-use discounts once usage is predictable. Exporters working for foreign clients can often bill cloud usage through the client's own project.

Is 1 Sol a Google Cloud partner?

1 Sol builds on Google Cloud and is a delivery partner to Lanthos, a Google Cloud and Gemini implementation partner in the US. Our founder holds Google Cloud Gemini Enterprise certifications.
